Now that the elections are over the real question we must ask is what’s next? Seemingly a very different political climate than the one we’ve been seeing since 2006 when Democrats were picking up speed, that’s what. This election, the Republicans gaining more seats in the house than Democrats did in 2006 and 2008 combined, making it crystal clear that the power in Washington is shifting.
This huge shift could be considered the beginning of another political realignment in the United States, just like that of the 1950’s or the Republican revolution of 1994. This could be due in part to the increasingly popular Tea-Party Movement, which “has made the Republican Party safe for libertarians”. With 71% of Republicans identifying themselves as supporters of the Tea- Party Movement, it continues to gain speed. As Republicans prepare to take over the Senate and set their sights on the House and the Presidency in 2012, there is no doubt that the ideals of this movement are making their way into American politics.
I don’t know about you, but I smell realignment! The Tea-Party no doubt is weaseling its way onto the political scene, but it remains to be seem how they will do it. Will they take over the Republican Party, turning it into what many refer to as the “new, new right”? Or will a third party form, farther to the right than the traditional Republican Party? And what will remain of the Democratic and Republican parties we’ve known for so many years now? The future of American politics seems to be up in the air, with many changes in the works. Let just hope we get the kind of change we need.

I don't think the Tea Party itself is the best addition to our political scene. However, I do think new parties and influences are an appropriate and long needed addition to American Politics. Not everything is Republican or Democrat and I hope there is an emergence of other parties to help combat views.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that it is time our democratic nation saw other parties take form as a result of of this huge shift because states aren't just red or blue but "purple," a mix of both. It is time that new parties emerged to address this especially if there is to be a political realignment. Hopefully the outcome no matter what it may be is the kind of change our country needs.
